November 2005 - The Snipe Hunt
On the last day of the Wisconsin woodcock season in 2005, my brother, Ken, and I took
a tip from a veteran grouse hunter and logger about a prime patch of woodcock cover.
The catch was that we had to ferry across a wide part of the Pine River to get to it.  So
with a borrowed jon boat, a broken oar, lots of shells, the "Woodcock Queen" and plenty
of skepticism, we embarked on what we called "The Snipe Hunt."  It turned out the tip
was definitely worth the extra effort.  Belle pointed plenty of timberdoodles and we
easily shot our limits.  We even put a couple of grouse in the bag too.
