Hunting Pictures & Tales
November 2007 - The Way It's Supposed to Work
Anybody who knows about hunting ruffs over pointing dogs knows that perfect "text
book" bird contacts are the exception not the rule.  But on this absolutely spectacular
early November day, Boon and I had one of those classic memorable moments where it
all went like it was scripted.  He snapped a hard point looking directly into small patch
of blackberry brambles.  I had plenty of time to walk ahead of him and the bird flushed
on a soft left angle from right where I expected it to come out.  One snappy shot from the
28-gauge as it topped the young aspens brought the bird down for an easy mark.  I
walked back to him and with just a tap on the head, I sent him for the retrieve.  He was
out and back with my bird in seconds.  It was the only bird we put in the bag that day,
but it's still one of the most memorable hunts I've ever had with my best buddy.
Truly a classic grouse hunting moment.   I wish I still owned that little Red Label...
