October 2010 - Early Season Breakthrough
The consensus is that 2010 was the current peak of the ruffed grouse cycle here in
Wisconsin.  By my flush counts in the early part of the season, I would have to agree
that the bird numbers were very good.  However, we struggled a little with putting
multiple birds in the bag on several of our early season hunts.  Maybe it was just bad
luck or - more likely - bad shooting.  But in mid-October, things really started to heat
up & the breakout hunt occurred late one afternoon over Belle.  We had 12 flushes in
about 45 minutes & three ruffs (and a bonus woodcock) were brought to hand.
