Hunting Pictures & Tales
October 2007 - Young Dancers of the Three Affiliated Tribes
Our first sharptail hunting camp was on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in
western North Dakota.  Fort Berthold is home to the Three Affiliated Tribes or the
Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation.  Our hosts presented us with a very special gift
on the last day of our hunt to show their appreciation for our visit.  They brought a
troupe of young dancers out to camp to perform their hour-long cultural program of
traditional songs, dances, and story telling for Julie, me and just two other bow
hunters who were there that week.  The graciousness of their gesture was
overwhelming - especially when we were asked to join in the final dance of the event -
a dance to celebrate friendships.  Some of the best memories from hunting camp have
absolutely nothing to do with hunting.
