Hunting Pictures & Tales
October 2007 - It Rained Greenheads
On the last day of our Cando duck hunt, Julie and I found one of those honey holes
that waterfowlers can loose sleep over.  In the middle of a full square mile of harvested
barley was a single dinky pothole with only about 3 inches of standing water in it.
Hundreds of mallards were feeding in the barley stubble and then trickling in a few
birds at a time to water in the pothole.  We set out just a few blocks, hunkered down in
the cattails and let 'em work right into the hole.  The shooting opportunities were
many and Belle got lots of work retrieving.  It was hard to head home knowing that we
had just started to scratch the surface of a duck hunting in North Dakota.
