November 2008 - Training Pays Off
Whenever possible, we try to do combo hunts when we go to North Dakota.  When Mark
Lamers and I were out there in early November 2008, we had hopes to split our time
evenly between hunting ducks and pheasants.  The weather just turned out to be too
darn nice for great duck hunting, but we did get a few opportunities.  On one morning
hunt, we had some shooting on a good-sized pond and this duck sailed on us before
coming down well over a hundred yards out.  After finishing a close mark, I lined up
Belle for a blind retrieve and she handled it beautifully.  It just goes to show that all
that versatile hunting dog training is worth the effort.  Valuable game gets recovered
when a well-trained dog is on the job!
